Advocacy
Relentlessly Advocating For Scope Of Practice
OPA has met with MPPs and MPs, written many letters, developed tools and messaging, and provided support to help members advocate, so that the implementation of regulations for our full scope of practice can get done. This has included:
Advocacy
Advocating for Advanced Practice Roles
We met with other stakeholders, including the Advanced Clinician Practitioner in Arthritis Care advocacy group seeking to progress the recognition of the title and definition of advanced practice in Ontario.
Advocacy
Community Physiotherapy Clinics (CPC) Advocacy
We engaged in intensive, continuous consultations with the Ministry of Health and the Ontario Medical Association to make the case for substantial program changes. Some of the results of our advocacy were the removal of the requirement for physician and nurse practitioner referrals, a limit of one diagnosis per episode of care, a 5% increase in transfer payments over two years, and virtual care eligibility.
Advocacy
Submission To Standing Committee For Finance and Economic Affairs Pre-Budget Consultations
OPA's pre-budget submission in 2024 highlighted key areas that would bring substantial returns through increasing capacity in Ontario's healthcare system and achieving the government's objectives. Recommendations advocate for working up to full scope, addressing program issues for community rehabilitation, and reducing red tape in the auto sector.
Advocacy
Auto Insurance
We continue to advocate for red tape reduction, fair compensation, and administrative efficiency in the auto sector. Sitting at several tables, OPA’s voice is heard through the Coalition of Health Professions in Auto Insurance, the Ontario Rehab Alliance, and the FSRA Stakeholder Advisory Committee for Auto Insurance. We are asserting pressure for the long-overdue removal of extended health benefits as first payor and increases in compensation outlined in the Professional Services Guideline.
Advocacy
Home Care Modernization
OPA has been consulting with Ministry leads for Home and Community Care about the status of rehabilitation in home care modernization. Of utmost importance, we have been fiercely advocating for improvement in compensation equity across organizations, locations, and providers.
Advocacy
Improvements To WSIB
We continue to work with WSIB to advance the issues impacting how our members deliver care—advocating for program improvements, addressing changes that allow for efficient practice, and advocating for fees that keep pace with practice and inflationary pressures.
Advocacy
Leading Health System Advocacy
Engaged Ontario Health senior leadership and the Ministry of Health and others to promote innovative solutions addressing health system capacity. Highlighted the value of physiotherapy in hospitals, primary care, home care, private practice, and beyond.
Community
Building Diversity & Inclusion
Enhanced efforts across platforms to promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Fostered community engagement through InterACTION education and programming.
Community
Supporting New Entrants
We are focused on how to engage internationally educated PTs in their professional association provincially and nationally and will work together to do more in the year ahead. Furthermore, we have been proactive in advocating for registration pathways and necessary resources for internationally educated PTs. We have also actively engaged with students from all 5 Ontario PT schools and the Bridging Program.
Community
Strengthen Local Connections
Fostered regional networking and educational opportunities for members across the OPA Districts, province-wide. Keeping you informed through socials, and events, and bringing your local voice to our AGM.
